It is spring in the Alaska Range and this caribou bull is standing overlooking the valley below where a herd is forming. These caribou have spent the winter foraging in the boreal forest along a northern river (in this case the Tanana) and will now start moving north to the breeding grounds for the summer. This is taking place all over the circumpolar north.
